We recently sat down with Dr. Timothy Brunson for a chat about his career and motivations. We thought you would enjoy his answers:
1. What made you decide to become a pediatric dentist/orthodontist? Tell me about your journey here.
My experience with my orthodontist was very influential to me. He was very caring and took great interest in what my extracurricular activities were. I really appreciated his level of care, and I greatly benefited from my orthodontic result. He helped create a great smile for me and helped build my confidence. From a young age I was always interested in dentistry, but after my time in braces I knew I wanted to be an orthodontist.
2. Do you have any memories that stick out to you of going to the dentist as a child?
I am a 4th generation dentist. I am fortunate enough to say my Grandfather was my dentist. I remember how exciting it was to go visit him and see him at work. He was so kind, patient and gentle. He always had a way of putting me at ease if I was scared or nervous. He made going to the dentist fun.
3. How would you describe a perfect day at work?
I truly believe that I have the best job in the world. I wake up each morning looking forward to going to work. I love interacting with my patients and feel so fortunate that I get to do what I do.
4. Some things about your job that make you feel happy/fulfilled?
One of the best aspects of my job is the day our patients get their braces off. It is so fun to see their big smile as they see the final result after all of their efforts during treatment. Helping our patients achieve the smile of their dreams is very fulfilling and rewarding.
5. What are your hobbies? What do you like to do in your free time?
Most of my free time is spent helping my children with their interests and hobbies. I love coaching them in sports and watching them compete. In my free time, I am a true sports fan (baseball and college football). I enjoy restoring furniture, I am involved in the Boy Scouts, and I enjoy working on community service projects with my local church group.
6. What do you like about living in Austin and what brought you here?
Austin is such a family friendly community. There are so many fun things to do here, from art to entertainment, to the great outdoors, it is truly a destination city. I feel very lucky live in Austin and to raise my children here.
7. What is your goal for each patient that comes to our practice?
My goals for my patients are simple. I want them to feel like family. I want them to receive the most outstanding care possible. I want their experience with us to exceed their expectations. I want them to enjoy their orthodontic experience.
8. Tell me about your family…Can be as simple as how many or anything else you would like to share?
I have an amazing family. I am so lucky to have Megan as my wife. She is so kind and caring. We are blessed with 2 sets of twins! I never thought that we would have a set of twins, let alone two. Each of my four children are so unique and talented. It has been the joy of my life to raise them, spend time with them and to see them grow up.
9. What volunteer service do you/have you participated in?
I am involved with the Boy Scouts of America. I participate in the give kids a smile program. I am a member of several local service groups that help the less fortunate and provide disaster relief. I am a member of the TDA, AAO, and the capital area dental society (CADS).
10. Any other interesting facts about you?
I have traveled to Costa Rica, Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico to perform dental procedures on the poor and less fortunate. I spent 2 years in South Korea as a church missionary.
