We recently sat down with Dr. Scott Franklin for a chat about his career and motivations. We thought you would enjoy his answers:
1. What made you decide to become a pediatric dentist/orthodontist? Tell me about your journey here.
I’ve wanted to be a dentist since I was 9 years old. I spent so much time at the dentist and orthodontist as a child getting cavities filled and teeth straightened! My dentist and orthodontist made such a great impression on me and I really enjoyed working with my hands building model cars and airplanes. Dentistry just seemed to be my calling! After my third year of dental school I decided that the two aspects of dentistry I enjoyed the most were pediatric dentistry, and orthodontics. So I decided at that time to go to school an additional four years in order to specialize in both.
2. Do you have any memories that stick out to you of going to the dentist as a child?
I grew up in a small town and my dentist’s office was about a mile from my house. I remember as a fourth grader my mom dropping me off at the dentist on her way to teach school. After my appointment. The dentist would make sure that my laughing gas had worn off, then I would walk home by myself. My how times have changed!
3. How would you describe a perfect day at work?
A perfect day at work would be one in which we stayed on time from start to finish and knew that every patient and parent was 100% satisfied with the care and service our office gave that day!
4. Some things about your job that make you feel happy/fulfilled?
I love creating life-changing smiles through the art and science of orthodontics. I love the relationships that are built through sincere care and trust. Seeing former patients stop by to visit us reminds me that the relationship is what means the most!
5. What are your hobbies? What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time I love to coach and mentor young men. I have been coaching football and baseball for 10 years now. Also, I love to hunt and fish. My dad instilled a love for the outdoors in me.
6. What do you like about living in Austin and what brought you here?
I attended the University of Texas, met my wife there in 1986, and have always loved Austin. I love the hills, lakes and natural beauty of Austin and am so thankful to call it my home.
7. What is your goal for each patient that comes to our practice?
My goal for each patient that comes to Smiles of Austin is for them to know that we truly care about them and want to give them the best treatment possible.
8. Tell me about your family…Can be as simple as how many or anything else you would like to share?
I am blessed to have an amazing family! My wife (Sherry) and three children (Jenna, Jace, Josh) are the perfect combination of love and grace.
9. What volunteer service do you/have you participated in?
I spend most of my free time volunteering as a coach and mentor. I love helping boys develop into young men who will someday lead their families and communities well. I also enjoy participating in community service projects with my church, Austin Ridge Bible Church.
10. Any other interesting facts about you?
I’m a pretty simple guy. I love my family and my job. I love making others feel special. And when time permits, watching the sun rise on any lake is what soothes my soul:)
